Chapter 17: Hogmanay Morning
"The blue room," I said.
Across the bed Finlay sat up.
"Next to my grandson," said Elspeth. "With the key on his side now. She says the garden room's too damp for a guest of his standing."
"Where's Alasdair sleeping?"
"In his dressing room, same as he has since October. He's not said ten words since you left." She sniffed. "He sat in the hall tonight looking at your painting with the lights off."
"We'll be there in the morning, Granny."
"Come to me first. Not to him. He'll shut the door on you."
She hung up.
Finlay was already pulling his jumper on in the dark.
"Not now," I said. "In the morning. Sleep."
"I'll not sleep."
"Then lie down and don't sleep beside me."
He did, eventually.
We came down off the pass into Glenmorran at half nine on Hogmanay with the sun just clearing the hill.
Elspeth was right.
Alasdair was in the estate office with the door locked.
Finlay knocked.
"Dad. It's me. Open the door."
Nothing.
"Dad. Euan's in the blue room. Do you know why?"
A chair creaked inside.
