Chapter 19: The Bells

The microphone whined.

Three hundred heads turned to the stage.

The fiddler stood with his glass halfway to his mouth.

At the top table Alasdair half rose from his chair and sat down again.

My mother put her hand flat on the cloth.

"Sorry to stop the band," I said. My voice came back off the far wall, too loud. "There's twenty minutes to the bells. I'll be quicker than that."

Somebody by the bar laughed nervously.

Finlay had reached the foot of the stage.

He stood there with his back to me, facing the hall, his arms folded.

Nobody was coming up those steps past him.

"Euan," I said. "You're buying the hill tonight. So the glen should know who it's dealing with."

Euan leaned back in his chair and spread his hands to the room.

"Here we go."

"Where were you at six o'clock on the twenty-ninth of December?"

"Inverness," he said, easily. "As I told my uncle. As he believed."

"Your car was under the pines by the burn. At the shack."

"Ailsa." He shook his head at the tables, sorrowful. "This is a lassie who's been caught with her own brother, and now she's throwing mud at everyone in the family. You've all heard. Don't make her do it in public."
