Chapter 15: Ash
Sigrun kicked the passage door off its hinges and shouted for buckets.
The kitchen came running.
Cooks, scullions and the boy with the onions formed a line from the well to the bake-room door.
The water went hand to hand until the sloshing sounded like rain.
Ketil came down the tower stair at a dead run.

"Every page."
"It's ash."
He did not answer.
He knelt in the soot and started lifting fallen planks off the floor with his bare hands.
I knelt across from him.
I did not say anything either.
We dug side by side in the ashes for an hour.
My hands went black to the elbow.
His coat was off, his shirt stuck to his back, and a smear of soot ran from his temple across the scar in his eyebrow.
