Chapter 19: Not For Sale
I didn't look at Matvei as I passed him.
I walked up the middle of that ballroom in my jeans and my sneakers, and two hundred people in black tie watched me do it.
Nobody laughed now.
At the head table I stopped in front of the white tablecloth and picked up the page Matvei had signed.
The ink was still wet. Four million dollars. Assigned to Halle Atwater. For one dollar.
Parker leaned back in his chair.
"Halle. You're not dressed for this."
"I'm never dressed for anything you do," I said. "I just clean up after it."
Somebody at the next table choked on a laugh.
There was a microphone on a stand beside the podium. I'd never touched one.
I pulled it down to my height. It shrieked once and the whole room flinched.
"Sorry," I said into it. "I'm new."
That got a real laugh, from the back, where the dockworkers stood along the wall.
"My name is Halle Atwater. My father left me half of Atwater Marine."
"My brother has been trying to sell it without me for over a year."
