Chapter 10: Samhain
The Clava Cairns stand in a ring of beeches a mile past Culloden, three heaps of grey stones older than any clan.
On Samhain night there were three hundred people standing among them in the dark.
Every one of them held a torch.
I had never seen so many in one place who knew what they were.
Coll had driven me there in silence.
Peigi and eleven of the tied hands followed in the minibus.
At the edge of the trees he stopped and looked at my wrist.
"A tied hand stands outside the stones," he said. "That's the law. I can't bring you in."
"Then I'll stand at the edge," I said.
"If it goes wrong..."
"It won't."
"If it does," he said, "look at me."
He walked into the ring alone.
The wolves parted for him, as they always did, and closed behind.
I stood with Peigi at the line of the trees, where the torchlight ended.
The red cord on my wrist felt too tight.
The Reeve stood in the middle of the circle, on a flat stone, in his best waistcoat.
