Chapter 20: The Depot
The Flynn depot sat behind a chain-link fence beside the rail yard, and it was lit like a stage.
Forty trucks were parked in rows under sodium lamps.
It was ten-forty at night, and the night shift had come out of the break room one by one and stood among them.
I had asked them to come, and they had.
The older driver who had taken off his cap for me in the lobby stood at the front with his arms crossed.
"We got your call, Miss Flynn," he said. "Your father would've done the same."
"Mrs. Kane," I said. "But call me whatever you like."
Denton and I stood at the gate with our backs to the road.
A black Mercedes had pulled up to the dispatch office twenty minutes before us.
It sat there with its door open and its engine running.
Light flickered in the dispatch office window.
"She's inside," the driver said. "Been in there a while. Hauled out a whole cabinet."
We crossed the lot together.
Around us, the drivers fell in without a word.
