I did not ask Benedict about the card that night.
I put the phone face down on the nightstand and said, "In the morning."
He said, "In the morning," and neither of us slept.
At eight he drove me to the clinic.
He did not speak the whole way, and I did not push him.
When he pulled up outside, he looked at the wheel and not at me.
"Whatever you need to ask me," he said, "ask me tonight. I'll tell you everything I remember."
"Okay."
"Hallie."
"I know."
I kissed his cheek and got out.
The clinic's front steps were wet from an early rain.
A man was unloading boxes of kibble from a delivery truck, and a young couple waited with a carrier on their knees.
And Kendall was sitting on the top step in a rumpled green dress, the same dress from the club, with her shoes in her hand.
