Chapter 7: Midnight Visit
Rhys closed the door behind him and stood with his back against it.
"Don't call the nurse," he said.
"I wasn't going to."
"I'm not supposed to be here."
"Neither was I."
He didn't smile. He crossed the room in three strides and stopped at the foot of the bed.
I sat up and pulled the blanket to my chin.
Four miles away his wedding supper was going cold. His new wife was in the Luna's bed, or waiting for him in it.
He had come here instead.
"The moon isn't full," I said. "Full moons only, Alpha. Those were your rules."
His jaw moved.
"I know what the rules were."
"Then why are you here?"
"Because my wolf wouldn't settle." He said it low, through his teeth. "Since the day you left the Hall it paces. It was at the altar tonight, pulling me toward the door. I said my vows with my hands shaking."
"That sounds like a medical issue."
"Nora."
"Go ask the healer. She's very thorough."
He took a breath.
"They told me you lost them," he said.
It was not the thing I expected him to say.
I had expected something about the seat or the divorce or a lie he'd found out.
He sounded tired.
"Who told you?"
"The healer. Priscilla. The report said there was no cardiac activity."
"There is."
"The report said you lost all of them in the crash."
"Rhys. Look at me."
I pushed the blanket off.
I wore a hospital gown that tied at the neck, and when I lay back against the pillow the cloth fell across my stomach.
