Chapter 17: Her Father's Page

"Take it," Amos said.

I had expected him to lock the book away again, and I stood there with my hand flat on the cover.

"Take it out of my house. I won't ask you what you do with it tonight."

"Why?"

"Because I want to see what you do with it."

I didn't answer him.

I put the ledger under my coat, and I walked out past the driver and the old captains in the hall.

I held it against my ribs the whole way down the hill.

Suzette was at the kitchen table on Spruce Street, with a frozen bag of peas on her cheek and her bandaged arm in her lap.

She looked at my coat.

She looked at the shape under it.

She put the peas down very slowly.

"It was in my grandfather's vault," I said, and I set the ledger in front of her.

She didn't touch it for a long moment.

Her eyes ran over the red cloth, the cracked spine and the blue ink showing at the edge of the pages.

"That's his handwriting," she whispered.

"Yes."

"I used to watch him write that column. He'd lick his thumb before every page."
