Chapter 18: Withdrawn

Nobody at the table moved.

"My new lawyer filed the withdrawal at nine this morning," Colin said, like a man reading the weather.

"Joint petitions need both signatures. I took mine back."

"The case is closed. The hearing is cancelled."

"You're still Mrs. Hargreave, Pam. Come home."

"Get out of my house," his father said.

"It's my house too, Dad."

"Get out."

Colin looked down the table at the aunts, the cousins and the great-uncle, all staring at him with open mouths.

For the first time since I'd known him, he seemed to notice that nobody was on his side.

He smiled anyway.

"I'll let myself out," he said, and he did, one step at a time, with the paper still hanging from his hand.

I found my own voice in the front hall.

I called my lawyer from beside the portraits, with Gregory standing a few feet away and the dining room humming behind the door.

She answered on the first ring.

"He withdrew," I said.

"I know. The notice reached my office an hour ago, and I was about to call you."

"What do we do?"

"I file a new petition tonight, on my own, and an emergency motion first thing in the morning."
