The money landed on Friday morning, at 9:02, from an account in Colin's name.
There was a note attached, typed by a lawyer and signed in a shaking hand by Colin's father.
It said only: Interest included. I am sorry.
I read it standing in the Mercy General break room.
Then I bought Ivy a coffee and a muffin, and she cried into the muffin.
On Sunday at six o'clock, I drove up to Chestnut Hill in my own old Honda.
Nobody had put a disc under the bumper.
I checked.
Gregory stood on the gravel drive in the dusk with his hands in his pockets, in a charcoal suit with no tie.
He had been standing there for ten minutes, waiting, and he pretended he hadn't.
"You're early," I said.
"I'm punctual."
"You're early and nervous."
"I get nervous," said Gregory, "when I'm about to eat with my family."
