Chapter 14: Vito's Debt
Vito was waiting in the basement when I came home, with a black case open on the workbench.
"Cesare says you asked for this," he said.
"I asked him to teach me."
"He's no good at teaching. He shoots like he breathes, so he can't tell you how." Vito lifted out a small gray pistol and checked it. "I'm the one who taught his wife."
He said it without looking up.
I stopped on the bottom stair.
"You taught her."
"Twice a month, in this room, because she wanted to know how. She was a better shot than he is." He set the pistol on the bench. "Come here."
The basement had a cinder-block wall and a paper target pinned to a sandbag at the far end.
Vito stood behind me and moved my elbows with two thick fingers.
"Both hands."
He nudged my grip lower.
"Don't squeeze it like it owes you money. Breathe out, then press."
