"Are you sure it was him?" I said.
"White hair. Leather jacket. Your boyfriend, Callie."
I sat on my bed with the pencil still in my hand.
I could feel the old me waking up.
She knew exactly what to do.

Call the garage.
Call the warehouse.
Take the bus to Fourth Street and stand on the corner until the red car came back.

Bea watched me from the door.
"What are you going to do?"
"I'm going to ask him."
"Just ask him?"

I picked up my phone.
I typed, Where are you, and deleted it.
I typed, Bea saw you get in Dane's car, and deleted that too.
In the end, I wrote: Can we talk tonight? Whenever you're free.
The three dots came up right away.
They went away.
They came back.
JESSE: garage at 8
JESSE: I was going to tell you. I swear I was.
I worked on the mural all afternoon so I wouldn't scream.
At eight the garage was warm and smelled like coffee.
The old man had gone home.
Jesse was sitting on the bottom rung of my ladder, under the half-painted door, with his elbows on his knees.
