Chapter 26: The Cellar

Caspian was already at the door.

"No," I said.

"He's my father."

"And there are two council guards at the bottom of your stairs since six o'clock. For the King's safety, on the eve of the Assembly." I caught his sleeve. "If the King is found anywhere near that prisoner tonight, what does Raife call it?"

He shut his eyes.

"Breaking him out," he said.

"Unfit. In front of everyone. He moved your father so you'd go looking."

Caspian stood there with his hand on the oak door, breathing.

His eyes were gold and his hands were shaking.

Then he took his hand off the door.

"Then you go," he said. "Please. Find him."

"I'll find him."

"You can't smell him."

"I don't need to. He's lost. I know where lost things go."

He went down to the guards first.

I heard him through the arrow slit, very polite.

"Gentlemen. It's cold. Please come in and have some tea. Miss Roswell has baked."

There was a pause, and then boots on the stairs, and the kitchen door, and Annis's voice saying "Cardamom," like a spell.
