Chapter 31: The Meadow

Caspian went very still on the quilt.

"Name it," he said.

"Not until I've got my Warden's License."

He looked at me.

"I'm not marrying you as the farm girl who needed a crown to keep her wolves," I said. "I want my own paper. In my own name. Then I'll marry you."

"The exam's in May."

"I know when the exam is."

"That's five months."

"Then you'd better be patient," I said. "I hear you're good with them now."

He started to laugh.

He laughed so hard he lay back in the hay, and I put the ring on my own finger while he was doing it.

"Deal," he said to the stars. "Please study fast."

I didn't study fast.

I studied hard, every night, at the desk in the tower study, with my books stacked on a crooked shelf made from a pew.

Caspian brought me tea and quizzed me on wolfsbane dosages and never once let me win.

In April the two young brothers from the New York pack walked out of their pen on two legs.

I'd been sitting with them every weekend since Christmas, with my back turned.

They'd been wolves for four years.

They came out shaking in two of Grandpa's barn coats, and their mother, who'd driven up from New York, fell down on her knees in the mud.

I sat on the fence and cried, and Grandpa wrote two names in his book under a line that said Home.

The Warden's License came on graduation day.

The Dean gave it to me himself, on the steps of the great hall, after the seniors had walked.

The first one Greyling had ever given a human.

"Miss Coldwell," he said, and shook my hand. "Try not to change anything else."

"No promises, sir."

Caspian was standing in the front row in his graduation gown, beside his father and Grandpa.

He clapped louder than anybody.

The wedding was the next afternoon, in the meadow below the pens.

The grass was full of buttercups.

Annis had made me a dress.
