Chapter 16: What I Promised in April
I did not ask him that night, or at the club, or in the car park with my hands in my pockets.
I went to the old glass greenhouse behind the kitchen garden, where the gardener had let me hide since I was nine.
The panes were fogged, and the air smelled of tomato leaves and wet clay.
I sat on an upturned pot and waited for the one person who would know where to look.
He came at dusk, in the charcoal suit with no tie, and stopped in the doorway.
He had a cream envelope in his hand.
He looked like a man who had rehearsed on the drive and lost every word.
"Blythe found you," he said.
"Blythe told me to ask you something."
"I know what she told you."
He shut the door behind him.
"Her father said it to my face this morning, in front of my mother."
"Then say it to mine."
He set the envelope on a potting bench.
"In April," he said, "Colin Harrington asked me to lunch."
