Chapter 18: Kersti's Answer

I carried Amos's rye up the drive at ten past eight on Wednesday morning, as I had every morning that week.

I came in by the kitchen door, because that was where my mother would be.

She was standing at the great black range with her back to me, stirring a pot of oatmeal.

She had come up at six, she told me later, and nobody had asked her to.

"Amos has to eat," she said, without turning around.

"He has an entire cottage of people who'd feed him."

"He likes it from this pot."

The cook sat at the long table shelling peas she didn't need.

The gardener had come in with eggs, and the driver was reading the paper in the corner.

Both maids were polishing a silver tray that was already clean.

They had been fired on Sunday, and they had all turned up at the same kitchen on Wednesday with their sleeves rolled.

None of us said why.

The swing door opened.

Rosalind stood there in yesterday's blouse, with a wrinkle across the front and her French twist coming down on one side.
