Chapter 22: What Blythe Bought
The auctioneer had a catalogue on the podium, and he opened it because four hundred people were watching him.
"The lot offered," he read, "is Windward, being Parcel A, the main house and its grounds."
He turned the page, and cleared his throat.
"Excluding Parcel B, being the gatehouse, the boathouse and the ravine frontage, and the gate road that runs between them."
"The what?" said Blythe.
"Parcel B is held individually by Mr. Amos Whitcombe. It has been since 1998."
Amos raised his cane, politely.
The crowd made a sound I will remember until I die.
It started at the back and rolled forward, a long and growing murmur, and then somebody laughed.
Blythe stood at the podium with her paddle in her hand.
"That's the cottage," she said. "That's a cottage and a shed."
"It's also the gate," Amos said, cheerfully, coming down the steps. "Come and see it, my dear. You'll want to see what you bought."
She went, because she couldn't not.
So did four hundred people, in a long straggling procession across the lawn and down the drive.
The brass band brought up the rear, playing something jaunty.
The drive curved down to the gate.
It was a pair of iron gates between two stone posts, set into a low stone wall.
Beside it stood the gatehouse, with the porch light still on.
Beyond it was Gate Road, and the world.
"That's the only way in," Amos said. "Look around you."
"The wall runs the length of the bluff, and the lake is on the other side."
"The ravine stair is mine, so the beach is mine."
He rapped his cane on the post.
