Chapter 5: Almost a Sentence
The Branch's dome was cold enough that Nolan could see his breath at midnight.
The telescope stood in the middle of the floor, and the slit in the roof showed a strip of sky so thick with stars that single ones were hard to pick out.
Lydia sat on the observing platform with a laptop on her knees.
Nolan sat on a stool two feet from her, checking the sweep.
They had been running a sky survey for two hours.
It was the plain work of watching numbers scroll, and neither of them had said a word that wasn't about it.
At one o'clock she put a blanket over her legs.
At half past, she moved the blanket until it covered the edge of his stool.
"It's wool," she said, when he looked at her. "You're allowed."
He took the corner of it.
Their shoulders were an inch apart.
The cold crept up the metal stairs, and the dome made small ticking sounds while it cooled.
At two o'clock Lydia's head tipped sideways and came to rest against his arm.
She was asleep.
He knew it by her breathing, slow and even, and by the way the laptop slid out of her hand.
He caught it before it hit the floor.
Then he sat there with her weight against his shoulder and the smell of her hair in his face.
It was cedar smoke from the cabin, and something under it that had been hers for as long as he had known her.
He did not move for an hour.
His body noticed, and it was impossible not to notice, and he told himself it was the cold and the long night.
