Chapter 21: Cobb Comes Down
Dennis Cobb held up a single sheet of yellowed paper in his left hand, and the whole ballroom looked at it.
"This is the proxy authorization," he said. "The original, signed by Colton Thayne seven years ago."
His voice had its courtroom polish back.
"Mr. Thayne has told you he never knew his wife. He knew enough to sign this."
"Dennis," Colton said quietly.
"He signed this so a woman could marry into his family while he sat in Singapore," Dennis said. "She is not a victim. She is exactly what my daughter told you she was."
A few people in the crowd shifted.
I looked at the page in his fist.
It was thick, almost like cloth, and across the top a faint pale line ran from edge to edge, as straight as a ruler.
I had seen a line like that on a hundred forged documents.
"May I see it?" I said.
"No."
"You said it was the original."
