Chapter 15: Cold Spring

"April," the man on my porch said, sliding off the rail. "First warm weekend. Bring your mate, if you've got one."

He walked down my steps and got into his truck.

Soren's hand closed on the post beside me hard enough to crack the wood.

"Don't," I said.

"I wasn't going to."

"You were thinking about it."

"I was thinking about it for a long time."

Cold Spring sits four hours over the pass, in a high bowl of meadow with a hot spring running out of the rock.

It was still snowing in the shade when we got there in April.

Five packs had pitched camp around the water, with trucks and tents and a hundred fires.

Alphas stood about in twos and threes, in good coats, with their mates on their arms.

Every one of them stopped talking when I walked in.

Dell had driven the Stump's pie truck over the pass behind us.

Someone had to feed the Gathering, and she refused to be left out.

She was already handing slices to a gray-bearded Alpha who looked like he'd never been spoken to that way in his life.

"Eat it," she said. "You look peaky."

He ate it.

I walked through the camp with my chin up and Soren one step behind my shoulder, as I'd asked.

I heard the whispers go in front of me.

"That's her."

"She's got no mark."

"She's got no bond, and she holds the Sitting."

"What does she use for a spine?"
