Chapter 7: The Parapet
The wardens stood in the yard in four rows, and Unai spoke to them from the gallery above the gate.
I lay on the roof of the tower, flat on the cold slates, and listened.
He did not raise his voice.
He never did.
Thirty men in green jackets stood very still to hear him.
"The Bell-keeper has called the sweep for Sunday," Unai said. "Full moon. We muster at the border stone at dusk."
Nobody spoke.
"We go to the Hollow above Ezkandra. Every raider on that ground is to be driven over the stone."
"Driven, Alpha?" one of the older wardens said. "Not taken?"
"Driven. I'll say who is taken."
A murmur ran through the rows.
"The Roncal woman goes with us as guide," Unai said.
Another murmur, louder.
"By the Bell-keeper's wish. She'll walk at my side the whole way."
He turned and went in.
I stayed where I was and watched my brother in the third row.
Aritz stood with his chin up and his eyes on nothing, and he did not look at the roof once.
Good boy, I thought.
The wardens broke up as the light went.
They stayed in the yard to dose the ewes before the night.
The sound of thirty men and two hundred sheep rose around the foot of the tower.
