Chapter 15: Second Dose

Haldane's skin burned under my hand, and his pulse was stumbling.

"Osmond!" I shouted, and the kitchen door slammed open before I finished the word.

He took one look and picked the king up.

We ran him up three flights to the high room.

His head lolled on that broad shoulder, and behind us a plate was still rolling on the kitchen floor.

"Shut the door," I said. "Nobody comes in. Nobody."

"Understood."

"Not Brangwen's healer. Not the cooks. Not a priest."

"I said understood."

I dumped Mort's bag on the bed and counted what I had.

Activated charcoal, atropine, two bags of saline, a coil of tubing, the Taser with no charge in it.

It was not much to stand between a king and a coffin.

I slit the sleeve off his shirt and put a line in his good arm.

His pupils were blown wide, and his lips had a blue edge.

"What did he drink?" I said.

"Wine at supper. Water from the jug."

I turned and looked at the jug on the night table.

It was a plain stoneware thing with a wooden stopper, the kind that sits at every bedside in the hall.
