Chapter 24: The Table
The cheering lasted so long that Bess had to bang a pot lid to bring the pies out.
Darek had not sat down.
He stood at the head of the table with his glass in his hand, looking at me and not blinking.
"You said it," he said.
"I did."
"In front of everyone."
"In front of everyone," I said. "I thought you'd like the audience."
He put the glass down very carefully.
Then he came around the end of the table, took my face in both hands, and kissed me in front of two packs.
It was long and slow, and I held on to his shirt.
A wolf at the back whistled.
Another one threw a dinner roll.
"Mate," Darek said against my mouth, quietly, for the first time.
"Yes," I said. "You're allowed."
The party went on until the stars were out.
Bess came back from the county road with an empty blanket and a smear of flour on her cheek, and she reported that Imogen had eaten the whole plate and had not said a word.
"Where did she go?" I said.
"Bus station, midnight run to the coast. The beta drove her. He says he put money in the coat pocket and he won't tell me how much."
"That man is soft."
"That man is a menace," Bess said fondly. "Eat a pie."
I ate a pie.
By midnight the pack had drifted back to the hall.
Only the long table was left, with the lights still strung over it and a few of us in the chairs.
Muriel sat on my right with her shoes off and her feet on a crate, which she said was her right as an elder.
Bess was asleep with her head on her arms.
