Chapter 8: The Missing Page

Torin took the rogue down to the tower in the back of his truck, with two guards holding the man's arms.

"The Elder will hear him by morning," he told me, standing in my yard in Joss's spare jacket. "In front of the council."

"And your mother?"

"She'll be in the room."

"Good," I said. "I want her in the room."

He stood there another second.

"The term stands," he said. "Until you say otherwise."

He said it to the ground.

Then he got in the truck and left, and I touched my own mouth with two fingers and was furious at myself.

Joss put the kettle on.

It was four in the morning. Mud was drying on my mother's kitchen floor, and neither of us was going to sleep.

"I'm going to tell you what I saw," Joss said, "and you can tell me I'm wrong."

"All right."

"That wolf has not stopped for anyone in ten years. I've seen him take down a rogue twice his size. I've seen him go through my own forearm, and I had to hold on to him for an hour to bring him back."

He wrapped his hands around the mug.

"You said a single word, and he lay down at your knees."

"I know."

"So what are you, Orla?"

"I'm wolfless."

"A wolfless woman can't do that."

"I know."

"A wolfless woman doesn't heal a cut to the bone in ten minutes, either."

I sat down across from him.
