Chapter 14: The Bar
Clive walked around my hatchback and opened the passenger door.
It only opens from the outside, so he had to do it with a flourish.
He lowered himself into the seat and shut it behind him.
"You've had a hard morning," he said.
"How did you know where I was?"
"My man follows the car. He's very thorough."
Out past the windshield, the man in the gray jacket leaned on the sedan with his long camera hanging at his hip.
"Get out of my car."
"I'll be quick. I know what the old man wrote."
He said the old man's name.
"I know because my nephew has known since September."
My hands tightened on the wheel.
"The will came to his flat in a courier envelope two weeks after the funeral," Clive said.
"Full text. Paragraph twelve included."
"Caspar sat on it for a month, and then he hired a girl who would break every rule on cue."
"That's not true."
"Did he tell you he'd read it?"
"He didn't."
"Of course he didn't."
