Chapter 31: Tied

Virginia looked at the coffee pot.

Then at the woman holding it.

For the first time since I'd known her, she had nothing ready to say.

"Eleven years," the housekeeper said. "I poured every cup in that sunroom. I was standing behind the door with the tray that day, and you know I was. You fired me for it two days later."

"She's a thief," Virginia said. "She stole a brooch from my..."

"Then call the police," the housekeeper said. "There's a sergeant at table twelve."

Heads swung toward table twelve.

The officer from Front Street was sitting there in a plain navy dress. She lifted one hand off the tablecloth.

Virginia didn't call anyone.

Blair's father took the microphone back from me.

He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.

"Pendry Marine has carried Thornton Holdings' contract work for eleven years," he said. "As of tonight, it doesn't. My people will be at your office in the morning for our files, Virginia."

A noise went through the room. Not quite a gasp. The sound of four hundred people doing arithmetic.

At table four, the woman in the black suit was already on her phone.

Mitchell stood up.

He came around the end of the head table to the front of the stage.

His face was wet. I don't think he knew.

"I didn't know," he said to the room. "About the suite. About any of it. My mother lied to me. My wife lied to me. I was lied to as much as anyone here."

A few people looked at him with something close to pity.

My mother stood up.

She walked up the aisle between the tables in her good black coat, with her handbag over her arm.

She didn't hurry.
