Chapter 33: Collect Call

Ginny held the receiver away from her ear.

The Friday crowd had thinned to thirty, and every one of them turned toward the bar.

Cade was already crossing the floor.

"It's him," Ginny said. "He says he'll talk to Cade, or to the wife, or to anybody who'll hear it. He says it's about Rory."

"Hang up," said Rory.

He had been sitting on a stool with a beer.

He wasn't smiling.

"Don't give him a stage, Cade. He's a thief and a liar. You know what he did to your wife."

"I know exactly what he did to my wife," said Cade.

He took the receiver.

He looked at me.

I came to the bar and stood beside him, and I put both my hands on the wood where he could see them.

"Speaker," I said.

He pressed the button, and the room went silent.

A voice came out of the small speaker, tinny and hoarse, and I knew it before it finished the first word.

"Donohue. Is she there?"

"She's here," Cade said.

"Willa."

I closed my eyes.

"What do you want, Travis?"

"Nothing you'd give me." He laughed, shortly. "I've got four minutes and a guard who hates me. I'll make it quick. Ask your brother-in-law who paid my bail."

Nobody moved.

"Fifteen thousand, cash, in a bank envelope. A man I'd only ever seen in the passenger seat of my own truck. Ask him who paid the lawyer who walked out in October. Ask him who told me to scan the certificate in August and who told me what to do with it."
