Chapter 10: The Placeholder
The lawyer drove up from the city that same night and arrived at the bakery at ten, with snow in his hair.
It was the man in the grey coat who had brought me the end of my marriage in a hospital room.
He set his briefcase on a flour sack in the back room and did not sit.
"Mr. Ashcroft asked me to find everything on the original contract," he said. "I kept a recording from the first week. I keep every message from a client's family."
"Whose family?" I asked.
"Yours, Miss Lothrop."
Stuart stood by the oven with his arms folded.
The baker leaned against the doorframe with a mug in her hand, and she had made it very clear she was not leaving.
"Play it," Stuart said.
The lawyer took out his phone and set it on the flour sack.
He pressed one button, and a woman's voice filled the room.
It was Rosalind, but a Rosalind I had never heard, quick and flat, with none of her usual honey in it.
*Put the clause in. No pregnancies, no intimacy, a closed door. Tell the Ashcroft boy it's the girl's condition. She'll agree to anything I say is his.*
I stopped breathing.
*And tell her the pills are his condition. She'll take them from me, and nobody will ask. It's three years. By the end of it Celia will be done in Milan and ready to come home.*
*Make it tight, because I want that seat kept warm.*
The message ended.
Nobody moved.
The oven ticked as it cooled.
"I'm sorry," the lawyer said to me. "I didn't understand what I had until I read it again this evening. At the time I thought she was a protective stepmother."
