Chapter 8: Fourteen Faces
"Rosalind," Stuart said.
He was still on one knee, and his voice had gone cold.
"She sent me every paper to sign. She carried the contract between us both. She told me what you wanted before I ever met you."
"She told me what you wanted," I said. "And I believed her, because she was all I had."
I put my hand in my coat pocket.
The napkin was still folded in there, soft from three weeks of being carried.
I unfolded it on the rail between us.
The small white pill sat in the middle of the paper.
"That's what she gave me in her house, the night I left the hospital," I said. "She told me it was a vitamin. She watched me lift it to my mouth, and I palmed it."
Stuart stared at it.
"The same pill was in my bottle for three years," I said. "The bottle said, do not use during pregnancy. Rosalind kept my refills in her cabinet."
"Willa."
"There's more. Her phone lit up while I was in the bathroom."
I said the two messages out loud, word for word.
*Did she swallow it?*
*Make sure she does. I need her to lose them before Stuart sees a scan.*
The fishermen had gone back to their net, and they were listening with their heads bent.
Stuart stood up very slowly.
He put his hand on the rail, and the rope creaked under his grip.
"Celia wrote that," he said.
"Yes."
"She wanted you to lose my children."
"Our children," I said. "Say it right."
"Our children."
He turned his back to me, and his shoulders shook once.
