Chapter 22: Thirty-Eight Weeks

By one in the morning I was in a room on the third floor of St. Anne's.

I was swearing at a nurse I'd known since I was nine.

"Hon, you're doing great," said the charge nurse.

"I'm doing terrible."

"That's what great sounds like."

I had picked this hospital on purpose.

Agnes had walked these halls for thirty years, and half the staff on the night shift knew her by her cardigan.

They'd taken one look at her in the doorway, in the evening dress she'd worn to the Hartwells, and gone very quiet.

Then the charge nurse had hugged her.

"Welcome back," she'd said. "Whatever you did, we'll talk about it after she's born."

Now Agnes stood at my left with a cup of ice chips and her sleeves rolled to the elbow.

She had stopped being a mother in a gown and become a nurse again, and I could have kissed her.
