Chapter 16: The Regent
Darian held his first council at dawn in my father's chamber, with the King's bed still warm in the next room.
Twelve lords sat around the long table, and the mage stood behind my brother's chair.
I was brought in between two guards and made to stand at the foot.
They had not let me wash or change.
"Sister," Darian said warmly, as if we were at a feast. "Thank you for coming."
"I was dragged."
"A small difference." He laced his fingers. "The King is ill, and the realm needs a steady hand."
"Our physician says the King may never speak again."
"Your physician," I said, "is standing behind your chair."
A lord near the middle coughed to hide a laugh, and Darian's smile thinned.
"I will be brief," he said. "Marsden has confessed before the whole court. He will be hanged at the next new moon."
