Chapter 23: Seta's Dress

Seta's wedding dress took me five weeks, and I charged her full price.

"You are a Boghosian," I said, with pins in my mouth. "You can afford it."

"I'm a Boghosian who sleeps in your husband's guest room," she said. "Take it out of my rent."

She stood on the fitting platform in ivory crepe, with her curls pinned up and her arms held out.

She did not move while I worked.

It was a plain dress with a high neck and a long sleeve.

Nine days from now a priest would marry me by the church's book, to a man standing under his own name.

She had asked for one that would look like nobody's bride but her own.

I knelt and set the hem.

"A half inch," I said. "Don't step on it."

"I'll never step on it again."

My father had pulled his chair up to the front window with a bag of pistachios on his knee, to supervise.

He cracked a shell and cleared his throat.

"I would like to say something."

"Papa, no," I said.

"I will say it standing." He stood, groaning, and held up a pistachio like a glass. "My daughter walked into a church in September with a tape measure and came out with a husband and no deed to anything. She tore up my house in front of three hundred people, and she says it was a good price."

"Papa."

"I regret only the dollar," my father said. "I would like to find that dollar and put it in the church box."
