Chapter 11: The Dean's Offer

I had my jeans on and my sweater down before Aksel finished buttoning what was left of his shirt.

"Out the window," I said.

"It's the second floor."

"There's a fire escape."

"I am not going out a window," Aksel said.

"I'm going to stand here."

"She'll see you," I said.

"Then she'll see me," he said.

I looked at him.

He stood in the middle of my room with a torn shirt and my belt on the floor beside his shoe, and he looked like a man who had made up his mind about something in the last ten minutes and was not going to be argued out of it.

"Fine," I said.

"Stand there, then.

"Don't speak."

I opened the door.

Ragna Kvale stood in the corridor in her gray wool suit with her hands folded over her bag.

Halle stood behind her, with her arms crossed and a pen stuck through her curls.

"Miss Solheim," Ragna said.

"I am sorry to call at this hour."

"It's nine o'clock, Dean," I said.

"One likes to catch the girls in," Ragna said.

Her eyes went past my shoulder.

They stopped on her nephew.

I watched her take in the shirt, the room, the belt on the floor, the bed, and then me.

There was no expression on her face.

There was no expression at all, and that was worse than anger.

"Aksel," she said.

"Aunt Ragna."
