Chapter 6: The Honeypot

I wrote the landlady a check for the first month and put it on her counter.

"Give the cousin's money back," I said. "I don't have a cousin."

The landlady looked at the check and then at me.

"Oh, honey," she said, and tore up the receipt.

On Monday night I walked into the security lab for the first red-team exercise of the semester.

Nico stayed outside on the steps. That was in the terms.

The lab had thirty students at long tables and one professor with a whistle around his neck.

"Two hours," he said. "Eight flags hidden in a fake bank. First team to capture all eight gets nothing, because I'm broke. But you'll be insufferable about it."

Everyone laughed.

I put on my headphones and opened a terminal.

I had spent three years breaking into my own father's house for fun. A fake bank was not hard.

I took the first flag in six minutes.

By the fifth flag, two students had stopped working to watch my screen.

I took the eighth with forty minutes left, and the professor walked over and read my terminal in silence.

"Where did you learn that?" he asked.

"I grew up with a very paranoid family," I said.

He laughed as though I had told a joke.

I was packing up my laptop when I saw it.
