Tae-seong came to the side door of my wing at seven, with the gold-edged card in his shirt pocket.
He did not come in.
He stood on the mat and put his hands on my waist, and I put mine flat on his chest.
"Table 40," he said against my hair. "By the kitchen."
"You'll go."
"If you ask," he said.
"I'm asking."
"Then I'll sit by the kitchen and eat very slowly."
I laughed, and he kissed me.
It was brief and warm, and his thumbs pressed once into the small of my back.
The kiss ended too soon for both of us.
"The housekeeper left at four," I said.
"Seung-hwan is home."
"Seung-hwan is in his wing with a report."
"Then I should go before he comes out." He stepped back, and his eyes stayed on my mouth. "Lock this."
"I will."
He went down the service stair.
I turned the lock, and I had barely put my hand down when someone rang the front chime.
It was not a polite chime.
It rang three times, and the third was long.
