Chapter 21: Not One Thing
Six hundred heads turned toward me, and nobody breathed.
"Taken," the Chairman said again. "From a locked case, under my own spotlight."
"Husband," said Madam Ahn. She had risen, with one hand pressed to her chest. "Who last held it?"
"The bride carried it up."
"So she did."
Her voice was sorrowful and carried to the back wall.
"Chairman-nim," I said. I stood and did not hurry. "I did carry it."
"I opened the case in front of the Chairwoman of Osaka and laid the watch under the glass myself."
The silver-haired woman rose at the foot of the stage.
"I watched it set down," she said, in careful Korean. "I watched the lid close. It was there when the lights went low."
"Then it left the glass," I said, "when the lights went low."
A murmur ran along the tables.
Madam Ahn's smile thinned.
"There is a simple way," she said. "Let the hotel's security look in the bride's bag."
"Gladly." I lifted my clutch from the table and held it open above my head. "Let them look at my seat, too."
