Chapter 11: Late Moon
The moon came up late and enormous over the lake, and Griffin could not sit still.
He paced the length of the great room in his bare feet.
He stopped at the glass, and turned, and stopped at the fire, and turned again.
I sat on the sofa with a mug of tea and watched him with my feet tucked under me.
"You're making me dizzy," I said.
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be sorry.
"What's wrong?"
"The moon," he said.
His voice was low and strained, and when he turned I saw the gold in his eyes was not fading.
"It does this.
"Everything is louder, and closer.
"I can hear your heartbeat from across the room.
"I can smell you, and I can barely think."
A pulse went through me, low and hot.
"What do you do," I asked, "when it gets like this?"
"I run.
"I go out on the bluff, and I run till it's gone."
"Then go."
"I don't want to go."
He stopped in front of me.
His hands were fists.
"I want to put you down on that rug and not let you up till morning.
"And I'm afraid I'll be too much."
I put down the tea.
I stood up.
I was a foot shorter than he was, and half his weight, and I walked up to him and put my palm over his heart.
