Chapter 13: The Delivery Van
Tuesdays and Fridays I drove the wholesale route myself.
Eleven stops in the dark before the shop opened: two diners, a hotel kitchen, a church, the ferry office.
At five o'clock Griffin was waiting at the curb with two coffees and no driver.
"Where's your car?" I said.
"At home."
"Where's your man in the gray coat?"
"Asleep, I hope. I gave him the day."
He looked at the van.
It was lilac, with DAHLGREN'S on the side in cream letters, and a crew bench in the back for the market days.
"I'd like to ride along," he said.
"There's no leg room."
"I'll make do."
He folded himself into the passenger seat with his knees against the dash and his head bent under the roof.
I turned the key, and I laughed so hard I had to wait a minute before pulling out.
At the first diner he carried my trays two stacks at a time, and the cook stood in the doorway with his mouth open.
At the hotel kitchen the pastry chef whispered "Mr. Stroud" like a prayer, and Griffin said, "Ask her, she's the boss."
At the ferry office a woman in a puffy coat took her cinnamon rolls.
She stared at him until I signed her slip for her.
By the tenth stop the sky had gone from black to the color of dishwater.
I had one box left, for a church that didn't open until seven.
I drove past the church.
"Etta," Griffin said.
"Hush."
I turned down Pier Street and pulled into the lot behind the old cannery, where the gulls sat on the roof and nothing else moved.
