Chapter 19: Three Nights

On the first night Si-hyeon sat by Ha-neul's bed and watched the Heavenly Demon try to put his own life into a boy.

Gwi-han knelt behind Ha-neul on the infirmary cot, with both palms flat on the boy's back and his eyes closed.

A faint dark light moved up his arms.

Sweat ran down his face in a steady stream.

Bi Soo-ryeon stood at the foot of the cot with her fingers on Ha-neul's wrist, counting.

"More," she said.

"I'm giving it."

"More."

Gwi-han gave more.

When it was over, the red in Ha-neul's eyes had receded by about a hair.

Gwi-han swayed, and Si-hyeon caught his elbow.

"One," Bi Soo-ryeon said grimly.

On the second night, the skinny boy with the missing tooth woke up and asked for his mother.

On the third night, Ha-neul opened his eyes in the middle of the treatment and said in a very small voice, "Senior brother?"

"I choked you."
