Chapter 21: At My Right
Rhea's POV
I sat down at Donald's right hand, in the chair his brother had warmed.
The tablecloth was white and wrinkled, and somebody's wineglass had left a ring.
Donald didn't look at me.
He looked down the long table at the eleven directors and the wives, and at the empty places where the family had been.
"I'm going to say something to the board," he said. "And then I'm going to eat my dinner."
Nobody laughed.
He tapped the table once with a finger.
"For twenty-four years this table prayed for a daughter," he said.
"Four weeks ago, most of you watched a waitress stand in a studio and learn she was not my child."
The old director looked at his plate.
"That waitress put my daughter's flowers in my daughter's arms," Donald said.
"It cost her everything she had been promised. She didn't ask what it would cost. She just did it."
My throat closed.
"Rhea Quillan is my wife's blood. She is my niece," he said.
"From tonight she has a seat at the right hand of this family, and a name, which is the one she was born with."
He turned his head and looked at me for the first time.
"She has no inheritance, and she has refused one. I want the minutes to say that."
He took a breath.
"I want my grandchildren to read that a niece of this house turned down a fortune because she wanted a family without a bill."
Constance had her handkerchief against her mouth.
"That's all," said Donald. "Pass the potatoes."
They passed the potatoes.
Under the table, Sabina reached across from my left and squeezed my knee so hard that it hurt.
