Chapter 16: Leash Law
Boyd crossed the lot toward the gate with his lawyer a step behind him and his hand held out.
"Tar," he said. "There you are. You look great."
I did not look great.
I had a hot dog on a leash and a man's hand in my back pocket.
"That's far enough," I said.
He stopped at the gate.
His eyes went to my left, to the man on my bench in a flannel shirt, with a plastic parrot at his boots.
"Is that the kid?" Boyd said.
Beau went still beside me.
I felt it through the hand he had at my back.
I squeezed once and said, very low, "Don't."
He didn't.
I knew what it cost him, and I knew he'd keep to it, and my chest ached with that.
"His name is Beau," I said.
"Sure. Look, Tar." Boyd smiled with all his teeth. "I didn't come to make a scene. Here's the situation. You're going through something, which I understand, and I'd like to make sure the dog isn't caught up in it. I got a place with a yard. This is my attorney, he's helping me with the paperwork."
The man in the blazer cleared his throat and did not look at me.
"The decree gave Waffles to you," he said, to Boyd, not to me. "I told you that on the phone."
"It's a formality."
"It's an order."
"Okay," Boyd said, with his smile still going. "Then it's an order with a conversation attached. Tar, people are worried. Everybody says you've gone cold, and now there's, there's this. A kid, at the park, in costume. I'm saying that if you need time to figure out who you are"
"Stop," I said.
Behind him, every head in the park had turned.
