Chapter 18: His Mother's Table

Beau's mother lived in a small brick ranch in Garner with a concrete duck by the front steps wearing a rain slicker.

He parked the green truck at the curb, and neither of us got out.

"You're sweating," I said.

"It's fifty degrees."

"Your ears are red."

"I know what my ears are," he said.

Waffles and Tank sat in the back seat, scrubbed and combed for the occasion.

"Beau," I said. "Is this a test?"

"It's pot roast," he said. "And her. She's a lot."

"I work in a dental office," I said. "I deal with insurance companies all day. I've met worse."

He grinned, and the red went down his neck, and I took his hand off the gearshift and held it.

The front door opened before we reached it.

His mother was a short woman in jeans and a red sweater, with gray-blond hair cut to the jaw and his green eyes.

She had a dish towel in her fist, and she looked at me from my shoes up to my face and stopped.

"So you're the one on the bench," she said.

"Mom."

"I'm talking to her. You're the one on the bench."

"I'm Tara," I said.

"I know who you are, hon. Come in before the dogs get ideas."

The kitchen was yellow.

A clock shaped like a cat hung over the stove, with a tail that swung left and right.
