Chapter 7: The Box
The box was on my porch on a Tuesday, and Tuesday was not a day I had given him.
It was a plain brown mailer, the size of a paperback.
My name and address were on a printed label, and the return address was one I didn't know.
I carried it up the stairs against my hip, along the second-floor walkway, past the neighbor's pumpkins, and I knew before I opened it.
Nobody sends a woman a box on a Tuesday except a man who is about to ruin her week.
Beau was sitting on my doormat.
He had Tank at his feet, and his back against my door.
His cap in his hands, and when he saw me he stood up so fast that Tank groaned.
Waffles was barking on the other side of the door.
"It's six," I said.
"It's six."
"It's Tuesday," I said.
"I know what day it is."
"Then why are you on my porch?" I said.
"I'm not in charge of the post office," he said.
I stared at him.
He stood there with a straight face and red ears and said nothing else, and I couldn't decide whether to hit him or laugh.
