Teo pushed me behind him against the car.
His hand went under his coat and stopped there.
Men got out of all three cars.
Nine of them, in dark coats.
Some of them I'd seen on the door at Loyola, and one I'd seen at the Morra table, standing behind Ruggero's chair.
Every one of them had a gun out, pointed at the asphalt, not yet at us.
"Benny," Teo said quietly. "Inside. Now."
Benedetta didn't move from the hospice door.
"I'm not leaving her."
"Benedetta."
"Make me."
The man from behind Ruggero's chair stepped forward.
He was about forty, with a blue wool scarf and a broken nose that had healed crooked.
"Don Valenti," he said. "Nobody needs to get hurt. We want the phone. And we want her."
"No," Teo said.
"There's nine of us."
"I can count."
I looked at Teo's hand under his coat.
I looked at the guns, and the hospice windows, where a nurse was standing with her hand over her mouth.
I thought about my children asleep on Taylor Street.
