Chapter 29: The Chair
The whole bar had gone silent.
A tourist at the next table had her phone up, filming.
A bartender stood frozen with a cocktail shaker in each hand.
The second agent came across the lobby at a run and took Cordelia's other arm.
"Get your hands off me," she said. "I have a deal. I have a signed deal."
"You had one," the agent said.
The cuffs went on behind her back.
Her brown hair had come loose over one eye.
There was champagne on her cream silk, a long dark stain down the front.
I stood up.
I picked the rose card up off the wet table and wiped it on a napkin.
I held it out where she could read it.
"Congratulations," I said. "Those were your words. I'm giving them back."
She spat at me.
It landed on the table between us.
The agents turned her toward the lobby.
As they walked her past the next table, Renzo's mother set down her teacup.
"Miss Carrington," she said.
Cordelia stopped, because the agents did.
"You wrote that you'd see her at the gathering," Renzo's mother said. "I'm the one who sends the invitations this year, dear. You're not on the list."
Cordelia opened her mouth.
