Chapter 24: Try Again Tomorrow
The bed in the round room was a different size.
Shizuku noticed it from the door, with her hair still full of marigold petals and the whole lake singing through the dome above them.
It used to be as big as a rice barge.
Now it was a bed for two people who intended to be close.
"You made it smaller," she said.
"You wrote that it was too big, in your second request." He closed the door behind them. "You were quite right."
She turned round and he was already looking at her, and the look went through her.
"Come here, husband."
"Gladly."
He came.
He undressed her as slowly as he had on the last night in the lake, but there was no fear in it.
The festival robe fell, then the sash, then the white cotton underlayer.
At each bared place there was a glow.
It glowed on her shoulder where he had first bitten her.
It glowed on the nape of her neck.
The mark over her heart was brightest of all, pulsing softly in time with the one on his shoulder.
He knelt and kissed the lowest of her ribs, and she put her hands in his hair.
"I would like to take my time," he said.
