Chapter 31: The Cells
The cells are under the guardroom in the east tower.
Struan came down the stair beside me without asking if I wanted him to.
The captain unlocked the last door and stood back.
My uncle was sitting on a plank bed in a grey Guard shirt with no collar.
His wrists were in silver cuffs, chained to a ring in the wall, and the skin under them was red and blistered.
He looked up and smiled at me, the same smile.
"Your Majesty," he said. "It suits you."
I didn't sit down.
"You asked to see me."
"I did. I have something you want." He folded his cuffed hands in his lap. "I was beside your father when he died. I'm the only one who was. I heard the last thing he ever said."
"I'll tell you," he said. "Every word. In exchange for the south road. Exile, not a trial. I'll go tonight and you'll never see me again."
I thought about my father riding the ridge that morning, and what this man wanted me to pay for the rest.
"I don't need your last word from him," I said. "I know what he was going to do. He was going to stop you."
