Chapter 15: Scent

Benedict was waiting in the tower lobby when I came back.

He stood by the elevators with his hands behind him, in a charcoal suit.

He was as perfect and still as a photograph of himself.

"Miss Haverty," he said. "Welcome back."

Miss Haverty.

I hadn't been Miss Haverty since the night in his bed.

"Mr. Rhinelander," I said.

His nostrils flared once.

He knew exactly where I'd been.

Any vampire would have; he could smell the boathouse's cedar smoke and engine oil on me from forty feet.

His face did nothing at all.

"Birdie has dinner in the suite," he said. "I have a call with Singapore. I hope the test was... informative."

"It was."

"Good."

He stepped aside to let me into the elevator, and didn't get in.

That night I did something I'd sworn I wouldn't do.

I knocked on his study door at ten, and when he said "Come in," I walked straight to his desk.
