Chapter 16: No Badge

I got to the athletics building at 8:15 and the door didn't open.

I swiped my badge three times and the light stayed red.

A student came out with a bag over her shoulder and held the door for me.

I went in and walked to the coordinator's office.

She was at her desk with a coffee and a stack of paper.

"Ms. Kline."

"I'm here for the badge."

She opened a drawer and took it out.

It was the same badge. My photo, my name, a blue stripe.

She set it on the desk and I picked it up and looked at it.

"It's deactivated as of this morning," she said.

"I know."

"When the review's complete, you can have it back."

"When's the review."

"I don't have a date."

"You said that last night."

"I know."

I put the badge in my pocket.

"Can I get my things out of the training room."

"Not today."

"Tomorrow."

"Not tomorrow either."

"You've got my clipboard and my tape and my personal kit."

"I'll have somebody bring it down."

I stood there for a second and then I left.

Down the hall, past the trophy case, out the side door into the sun.

I sat in my car in the parking lot for a while before I started it.

Logan was on my porch when I got home.

He was sitting on the step with two coffees and a duffel bag.

"Hi," he said.

"Hi."

"You went to get it."

"I went to get it."

He stood up and handed me a coffee.

I took it and sat down on the step next to him.

"You're not supposed to be here," I said.

"I know."

"You're supposed to be at practice."

"I'm not going to practice."

"Logan."

"I'm not doing reps in a room with somebody else watching."

He unzipped the duffel.

Inside was a foam roller, a resistance band, a lacrosse ball, and a printed sheet.

I looked at the sheet.

It was the plan. My plan. Hand-copied, four pages, in his handwriting.

"You copied it," I said.

"I copied it Tuesday."

"Why Tuesday."

"Because I figured this was coming."
